Good Morning Everyone,
It's always good to greet you on Monday mornings. It looks like we have some rain in the forecast for today and tonight. I wanted you all to know the services were really good yesterday. We didn't have record crowds or anything like that, but the presence of the Lord was real and powerful.
I preached Sunday morning on the subject, "Do I Really Need Church?" Sunday night we finished up our series on, "How to Deal with Disappointment in Your Life." This has been a great series and I have heard many positive comments on what we've learned.
This morning I want to share some thoughts on a devotional I read recently. The story is told of a young soldier in the war. He was wounded in combat and ended up in a military hospital. For weeks he laid there thinking about the wonderful wife he left back home. Every day he would write her a letter and tell her how much he loved her and missed her. And every day, without fail, the young man got no reply.
Months passed and he gradually got better. He was rejoicing in the fact that he would soon be journeying home and be able to embrace the love of his life. After what seemed an eternity, he arrived at the front door of his home. His knock proclaimed he was more than a visitor, but that a hero had come home. Slowly the door opened and there standing in the entrance was the woman he loved. He took her in his arms and embraced her. Suddenly he stopped, for just over her shoulder on the shelf he noticed all his letters. Dozens of them were neatly stacked and in order and not one of them was opened.
Stepping back he asked, "Why? Why did you not open the words that told you how much I loved you and missed you?" She stared back expressionless, she had no reason. In her ungratefulness she had not opened even one letter. He turned with a broken heart and walked out the door never to return.
Can you imagine such a thing? What a tragedy. But the truth is, there are many such people as this lady. Somewhere in about every house there are words written especially for us that we have never read. They were written by Someone who loves us so much that He went to war us for, He died for us, and He is right now knocking on our door. Oh, we respond with words like, "I hear it read on Sunday." "I read a little of the letter every once and a while." Anyone who has ever received a letter of love will tell you that it is read repeatedly, it is studied, it is pondered, and its words resonate in your mind constantly. How much more attention then should we give to God's Words!
Do not be like this ungrateful young lady, but open and read God's precious words, and more importantly, believe in them. Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and dine with him, and he with Me."
Till Next Time, Pastor Don
